It is a generally held that the major psychiatric syndromes are universal but that their expression is coloured by the prevailing culture. Culture bound syndromes are those folk illnesses in which alterations of behavior and experience figure prominently. However, many are not syndromes at all. Instead, they are local ways of explaining any of a wide assortment of misfortunes.

The Psychodynamics of Conservative Breast Phobia

A Picasso masterpiece, Women of Algiers, sold recently for a tidy sum. When commenting on the record-breaking price the Fox news report fuzzed out the breasts (above pic) but left the buttocks intact. I can only assume that the reactionaries at Fox felt that this piece of art was offensive or sexual rather than simply artistic. But why not the gluteus?

Humans and stupidity have had a long and often stormy relationship.Thus the etiology of “IQ deficiency disorder” deserves an (irreverent) exploration. And the best place to start is the ESA (Excited States of America). The paradox of the ESA is that it gave us the science to land a fellow on the moon but also Kardashian worship, Fox news, and republicans. But we should start with the basics.
